Peru: What is tourism?

Tourism – as defined by the World Tourism Organization – comprises activities carried out by people during their travels to places other than their usual environment for a period of time less than one year, for leisure, business or other purposes.

Meanwhile, tourism in Peru is the third most important industry in the nation, behind fishing and mining.

It is mainly directed towards archaeological monuments, such as the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

Our country has more than one hundred thousand sites of interest, ecotourism in the Peruvian Amazon, cultural tourism in the colonial cities, gastronomic tourism, adventure tourism and beach tourism.

From Puerto Maldonado, in the Madre de Dios region, you can leave to live a formidable experience in the southern Peruvian Amazon, reaching the National Parks and National Reserves such as Manu and Tambopata.

Our territory has 12,000 lakes and 50 mountains that rise above 6,000 meters above sea level, the deepest canyons on the planet, among many other options, will satisfy the expectations of those who seek to release adrenaline on their travels.

THE MOST VISITED

To date, the Vinicunca or also called The Mountain of Seven Colors, has become the second most visited tourist attraction nationwide, after Machu Picchu.

Likewise, Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire and currently the Archaeological Capital of America, captivates us with a wide range of attractions that are not to be missed.

After these, the most visited places are: the Paracas National Reserve, the Huascaran National Park, the Colca Canyon, the Titicaca Lake, the Kuelap Fortress, the Nasca Lines, the center of Lima, among others.

RECEPTIVE TOURISM

It is expected that in 2019 international tourist arrivals will exceed 4.8 million visits and foreign exchange earnings from inbound tourism will reach a record of over US$ 5 billion.

The tourist trend is increasing year after year, because the Inca city not only represents the history of Peru, but also has geographical attractions that enrich it even more.

In recent years, the MINCETUR (Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism) has participated in various fairs and exhibitions held, most frequently, in Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, China, Argentina and Brazil, in order to publicize Peru’s cultural, natural and gastronomic wealth.

Currently, the contribution of the tourism sector to the country explains 4% of the GDP and the number of jobs would be around 1.5 million people.
