Foreign tourist arrivals in Peru grow 2.4% between January and May 2019

The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Edgar Vasquez, said today that between the months of January and May 2019, international tourist arrivals in Peru amounted to 1,823,536 tourists.

This figure meant a growth of 2.4% (42,446 more tourists) compared to the same period in 2018 when 1,781,090 foreign visitors arrived.

“In effect, the arrival of travelers from our main tourist issuing market, Chile, stands out with a growth of 6.8% and an additional flow of 34,000 international tourists to Peru,” he said.

Next come the United States (5.7% or 14,000 more); Ecuador (27.2% or 30,000 more); Colombia (5.4% or 5,000 more); Bolivia (24.4% or 16,000 more); Mexico (18.4% or 7,000 more); Spain (4.5% or 2,000 more); France (14.3% or 5,000 more) and Canada (9.3% or 4,000 more).

“It should be noted that these nine issuing countries concentrate more than 70% of total international arrivals in the country,” said Minister Vasquez.

Pacific Rim Alliance

It is important to mention that an increase of 7.3% (45,780 more) of tourists from the countries that make up the Pacific Alliance was registered.

Arrivals from these countries represented 36.9% of total international arrivals. Similarly, the arrival of tourists from Asia and Central America stood out.

“In that sense, although the entry of tourists from China is still small, in 2019 they will reach 18,000 visitors, we consider that this is one of the markets with greater growth potential,” said the head of Mincetur.

It should be noted that the arrival of international tourists entering through the Jorge Chavez Airport amounted to 1,33,527 tourists, a growth of 6.1%.

On the other hand, the Border Control Post (BCP) Santa Rosa, located in Tacna, registered 434,179 arrivals (2.8% more).

On the other hand, international tourist arrivals were down by the Binational Attention Center in Tumbes (-19.7%), PCF Kasani (-14%) and PCF La Tina (-14%).

Minister Vasquez said that the important thing is that the growth of international tourists continues and generates foreign exchange and opportunities for Peru.

“We have great expectations for the upcoming arrival of tourists to the Pan American and Parapan American Games Lima 2019, in addition to the various promotional campaigns that we are carrying out with Promperu”, he pointed out.
